Saint Augustine is revered as a patron for those facing severe depression, existential anxiety, and the restless mind. Whilst his traditional patronage covers theologians and printers, and he is invoked against sore eyes, his piercing psychological self-reflection makes him an enduring anchor for mental well-being today. Long before his conversion, Augustine endured acute emotional turmoil, an unsettled lifestyle, and shattering grief. Following the loss of a dear friend, he penned the famous words in his Confessions, "I became a great enigma to myself", capturing the vivid reality of depersonalisation and existential anguish.
Saint Thérèse of Lisieux
Saint Thérèse of Lisieux guides our work with anxiety, panic attacks, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder or scrupulosity. While popular devotion often depicts her smiling serenely with roses, her interior reality involved fierce psychological battles. At the tender age of ten, after enduring the loss of her mother and the sudden departure of her elder sister, she suffered a severe nervous illness marked by tremors, delusions, and profound sorrow. Her honest vulnerability demonstrates that holiness embraces human weakness, offering compassionate solidarity to anyone navigating mental distress.
